After World War 2 the Soviets and the Americans were involved in the nuclear arms race with each side investing a lot of money. When the Soviet launched sputnik into the space and the US was lagging behind, they were waiting for more innovative technology which would help them launch more bigger satellites into the space. As most of USA’s weapons were at the sea and the US navy wanted to find a way to allow those subs to be able to target exact enemy positions in a matter of minutes anywhere in the world, this concept gave birth to the GPS.
